In the curly hair world, we hear a lot more about curl creams than gels. What a shame! Gel actually performs the most important jobs for curls - it reduces frizz, defines curls, and locks them in place so they don’t stretch out. Creams mainly moisturize and enhance curls, but gel provides the hold. Sure, there are styling creams with some hold, but it’s usually very light. Using only cream might keep curls defined for a day; using gel can keep them intact until the next wash.
Cream and gel serve different purposes, so they can work together. However, creams often feel too heavy for fine hair. That’s why we at Curl Dealer prefer something lighter with the same moisturizing and defining effects, like a milk or leave-in conditioner. For curls that don’t need much moisture, gel alone is often enough.
If a brand releases a “curly hair line” without a gel, we don't even consider it.
Curl gels come in different hold levels - weak, medium, and strong. The hold strength depends on the ingredients, not how much product you use. So, applying a lot of light-hold gel won’t give you a strong hold. But keep in mind: the stronger the hold, the heavier the product and the less volume you get. Sometimes you have to choose - do you want more volume and looser curls that might not last all day, or smoother, well-fixed curls that hold for a week?
For thin and fine hair that you wash frequently, we recommend light or medium-hold gels or mousses. For medium-thick, dense hair washed less often, medium or strong hold is best.
