In the curly hair world, curl creams often get more attention than gels - but gels are actually the heroes of curl care. Unlike creams, which mainly moisturize and define, gels reduce frizz, enhance curl shape, and lock curls in place so they last until the next wash. While some creams claim to provide hold, their fixation is usually weak.
Cream and gel serve different purposes and can be used together. However, for fine hair, creams can be too heavy, so a lighter option - such as a milk or leave-in conditioner - is often better. For curls that don’t need much extra moisture, gel alone can be enough.
At Curl Dealer, we don’t even consider a “curly hair line” complete unless it includes a good gel.
Curl gels come in different hold levels: light, medium, and strong. The strength depends on the formula, not on how much product you apply - using more of a weak-hold gel won’t make it stronger. Stronger hold gels create longer-lasting definition but can slightly reduce volume.
Our recommendation:
-
For fine or thin hair washed frequently – use light or medium-hold gels or mousses.
-
For thicker, denser hair washed less often – opt for medium or strong-hold gels.
